The homework consists of a weekly packet that is sent home on Friday and is due the following Friday. Please have your child use a pencil to complete their work, checking for corrections and neatness. Spelling and reading practice need to happen each day, which will set your child up for the greatest success in class.
This is an example of the weekly homework introduction page. It states the essential question of the week, which relates to the shared and paired story of the week. This page also lists the reading and writing skills we are working on throughout the week. There are several pages in the homework packet that give students a chance to practice these skills. Please have your child practice reading and writing their spelling words daily, and read and discuss the high frequency and vocabulary words for the week. Our spelling test is on Friday, so be sure to have your child take a practice spelling test with you on Thursday to see if they need extra practice memorizing any of these words.
One of the most important parts of our weekly homework is the reading log page. Please read to your child at least 15 minutes each day and have your child read to you for at least 15 minutes as well. While you read, please ask your child questions about the stories they are reading. Questions could include: Who are the characters in the story? What was the setting? What was the problem in the story? What was the solution? It is important for your child to be able to retell what happened in the story from beginning to end.
